When an object or fluid approaches the movable plate, the capacitance of the capacitor changes. This variation in capacitance can be measured and used to determine the position, size, or composition of the object or fluid.

The capacitive sensor finds many applications in industrial automation systems: from position detection to the non-invasive analysis of object composition.
Capacitive sensor: how it works

A capacitive sensor is a device that detects the presence, absence, or distance of an object or fluid. It consists of two armatures, or plates, charged with opposite signs. The plates are separated by a dielectric material, which prevents them from coming into direct contact.

In a capacitive sensor, one of the plates is fixed, while the other is movable. When an object or fluid approaches the movable plate, the capacitance of the capacitor changes. This variation in capacitance can be measured and used to determine the position, size, or composition of the object or fluid.

The use of a capacitive sensor has several advantages compared to other types of sensors. For example:

 they are able to detect non-ferromagnetic and non-conductive objects;
 they are independent of the conductivity of the object or fluid;
 they are able to detect objects even at close range.

Capacitive sensor: the main types

Capacitive sensors can be of different types; depending on their use, they can be classified into:

 capacitive proximity sensor: detects the presence, absence, or distance of a target object in very small areas;
 capacitive level sensor: detects the fill level of liquids in containers;
 inclinometers: measure the tilt angle of an object or surface relative to gravity;
 capacitive pressure sensor: utilizes pressure in a cavity and a diaphragm element. The pressure applied to the diaphragm changes its shape, reducing its electrical capacitance;
 capacitive systems: connect multiple capacitive sensors together.

The capacitive sensor is used in a wide range of sectors. Among the main ones are: the wood, paper, glass, plastic, food, chemical, and mechanical industries.
