Power supplies: a comprehensive overview
Power supplies are essential tools for powering electrical equipment; below is a general overview of these instruments.

Power supplies: what they are
Power supplies are electrical devices that provide energy to electrical equipment by adapting the current flow from a main supply source. In this way, reliable power is provided to machinery, computers, and other electronic instruments. Power supplies can be part of the structure of the device they are intended to operate, or they can be stand-alone units. The latter must be connected between the mains outlet and the device to be operated.

Generally, power supplies consist of a rectifier and a filter, which are tasked with providing a constant DC output voltage.

There are different types of power supplies with specific properties, but they all share a common characteristic: efficiency. This represents the amount of power actually supplied to the internal circuits, divided by the amount of power absorbed from the mains supply.

Power supplies: function and components
Power supplies convert alternating current from the electrical grid into direct current by lowering the voltage so that the device can be powered correctly.

Depending on the operating principle, power supplies are divided into two categories:

 linear power supplies: provide one or more stabilized and constant DC voltages, independently of variations in the mains voltage;
 switching power supplies: stabilize mains electricity to produce a clean, stable, and efficient output voltage. Unlike linear power supplies, they transmit energy instantaneously.

Each power supply consists of a filter, a stabilizer, and a regulator. Thanks to these essential components, the correct operation of the power supplies is guaranteed.

 filter: transforms the output voltage of the rectifier into a DC voltage that is as linear as possible;
 stabilizer: ensures that the output voltage has a fixed value, even if the input voltage undergoes variations;
 regulator: helps maintain the output voltage at a given value; unlike the stabilizer, it controls its behavior when supply voltage variations occur.

Types of power supplies and sectors of use
Power supplies are distinguished into different types, and each power supply has a different use. In general, four categories are identified:

 AC/DC power supplies: transform alternating current from the electrical grid into direct current and regulate the voltage according to the needs of the device to be powered;
 DC/DC power supplies: modify the input voltage and, if necessary, can modify the waveform;
 AC/AC power supplies: are used in very specific cases. They allow for the lowering of the mains voltage;
 laboratory power supplies: offer the possibility to modify various current parameters. For this reason, they are used to test electrical equipment.

Depending on their use, power supplies find application in multiple sectors. Among the main ones, we find:

 marine and offshore;
 automotive;
 machine and plant construction;
 electrical wiring;
 maintenance;
 industrial production;
 military and defense.

["GET
