Pressure Transducer: What It Is and How It Works
A pressure transducer is an instrument that measures a quantity and converts it into an electrical signal.
Also discover linear transducers.
Pressure Transducer: What It Is
As previously mentioned, a pressure transducer or pressure sensor is an instrument capable of measuring a specific quantity or form of energy and converting it into an analog electrical output signal. Through this process, it is possible to:
measure a physical variable;
compare a physical variable with a measurement of the same nature;
process a physical variable;
acquire a physical variable through a data processing system and/or transmit a physical variable remotely through a data communication system for storage and/or display;
use a physical variable in a control system.
The electrical signal generated by the pressure transducer originates from the deformation of a diaphragm, which is connected to strain gauges. The deformation of the strain gauges causes a change in their electrical resistance. The electrical resistance is proportional to the applied pressure.
Pressure Transducer: The Various Types
Pressure transducers can be of different types, depending on the type of pressure they need to convert and the supported units of measurement.
Among the most common pressure transducers, we find:
differential pressure transducer: converts the pressure difference between two points;
absolute pressure transducer: converts absolute pressure, which is the pressure relative to a vacuum;
relative pressure transducer: converts relative pressure, which is the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure;
sealed gauge pressure transducer: similar to the relative pressure transducer. It measures pressure relative to a fixed pressure, rather than to ambient atmospheric pressure which can vary.
To choose the most suitable pressure transducer, it is important to know what stresses and/or atmospheric conditions it will be subjected to.
Pressure Transducer, Applications
The pressure transducer is used in a wide range of applications, including:
industrial process control: the pressure transducer is used to control industrial processes, such as energy production, oil refining, and chemical manufacturing.
science and research: the pressure transducer is used in scientific research to measure pressure in a variety of environments, such as the atmosphere, the ocean, and the human body.
medicine: the pressure transducer is used in medicine to measure blood pressure, intraocular pressure, and intracranial pressure.
Or in sectors such as: food & beverage, aerospace, hydraulic, and automotive.
