Linear transducer: the ideal solution for measuring linear displacements in industry
A linear transducer is a device whose function is to detect the position and velocity of mechanical movements in a straight line.
Also discover pressure transducers.
Linear transducer: what is meant by it
As previously mentioned, a linear transducer is a device whose function is to measure linear displacements. Its operating principle is similar to that of incremental rotary encoders. However, while encoders read a circular reference scale, linear transducers operate on a straight graduated scale.
There are several types of linear transducers, which differ according to the displacement detection technique used. Among the main ones we find:
incremental linear transducer: the operating principle of these transducers is similar to that of the incremental rotary encoder. In the incremental linear transducer, the disk is replaced by a graduated scale, in which bright zones alternate with opaque zones;
potentiometric linear transducer: is a device that converts the position of an object into a change in electrical resistance. These linear transducers consist of a resistive element, usually a wire or a metal layer, wound on an insulating support. A mobile contact is able to move along the conductor, depending on the position of the object to be measured;
magnetostrictive linear transducer: uses the principle of magnetostriction, according to which certain materials expand or contract when placed in an alternating magnetic field.
Linear transducer: operation
The linear transducers described above are all incremental types: they measure a series of displacements rather than an absolute position.
Their operation varies depending on the type used. Let's see how they work:
magnetic linear transducer: operates based on the magnetic principle. The cursor contains a magnet that reacts with a polarized magnetic strip. The advantage of this system is that it has no electrical contact on the cursor, which limits wear from friction and allows for greater precision and speed. Furthermore, magnetic systems are less sensitive to dirt than optical systems; therefore, they are more suitable for applications in industrial environments where processing involves the presence of dust or oils;
optical scale linear transducer: utilizes optical sensors or photodiodes that read high-precision graduated marks on a straight guide. The length of the movement made is measured based on this information. Optical scales are typically used on machine tools;
PD-PE series incremental linear transducer: operates based on the optical principle of reading a graduated scale, similar to optical scales. However, the reading head and the measuring scale are contained in a robust aluminum housing that ensures protection against environmental agents. This feature makes the mounting of the transducer particularly practical, as it is fixed to the machinery via mounting brackets or ball joints at the ends. The reading precision, ease of mounting, and wide choice of measuring strokes (from 60 to 990 mm) make this type of linear transducer suitable for all applications where it is necessary to measure a linear displacement.
Linear transducer applications: which sectors to use it in
In the industrial field, linear transducers are used on all types of automatic operating machines. They are usually paired with counting, display, and control systems.
The linear transducer is used in a wide range of sectors, including:
hydraulic;
automation;
robotics;
aeronautics.
The choice of the most suitable type of linear transducer depends on a number of factors, including:
required precision;
response speed;
environment in which the transducer will be used
